2nd Annual Big Bite Bacon Fest Provides Unforgettable “Foodtainment” at The San Diego County Fair
The Big Bite Bacon Fest sizzled once again with more bacon-y goodness than imaginable at The San Diego County Fair on Saturday, July 5th. The fest welcomed over 4,000 bacon lovers that indulged in unlimited bacon inspired culinary samplings and local craft beer tastings, pork themed entertainment, games, contests and even a wedding.
As guests filled the Del Mar Arena they were surrounded by over 40 bacon-infused tastings from local eateries and chefs such as Slater’s 50/50, Yummy Cupcakes, and Chef Jesse Lopez. More than 40 local San Diego lagers and ales were sampled from breweries like Aztec, Ballast Point, Pizza Port and Victory Brew. Additionally, the World Cup was displayed on the large screen jumbotron in the center of the arena for sports fans to enjoy during the event.
From breakfast to dinner, guests arrived with their appetites ready to indulge in bacon dishes originating from across Southern California. Vendors lined the edges of the event and were ready to showcase their innovative bacon-infused delicacies. Ghost Scream Hot Sauce offered Spicy Caramel Bacon Popcorn, which was the Top Critic’s Choice from Laura Cavanaugh and Kimi Evans of San Diego 6, The CW. From Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlour’s Elvis inspired Hunka Hunka Bacon Love Sundae to “Moink Balls” from Meat. Inc., it was easy for both a sweet or savory palate to satisfy their bacon cravings.
Guests who attended the lunchtime session witnessed the one-of-a-kind dream bacon wedding, held during halftime of the World Cup quarterfinals. Appropriately, the bridesmaids and groomsmen were adorned with bacon-rose bouquets and boutonnieres. Rachel Elkin, the pork lovin’ bride, said her vows to groom Ryan Peters while guests, outfitted in pig noses, cheered on the newlyweds. After the couple said I do, they received a wedding cake dressed in bacon from top to bottom and guests threw bacon bits instead of rice.
During the dinner session, attendees were prepped for the Big Bite Bacon Dish live cook-off competition that was hosted by Jesse Lozano from Star 94.1 FM. Each of the three pro chefs teamed up with one of amateur chef and one child chef to compete in the annual Dish contest. Kiely Kuhlmann and Josh Rennick tied for the first place prize for Best Child’s Chef. After a suspenseful coin toss, Kiely and her Bacon-Wrapped Roast Pork Tenderloin took the winner’s spot and a prize of cooking classes from Sur La Table. The first place Best Amateur Chef went to Jullie Hull and her Maple French Toast Cupcake filled with Bone Marrow. Derek Jaeger, from The Cravory, impressed the judges with his sweet dish of Bacon Cornbread Cookie and Blackberry Pepper Jam. The winning team, for first place in the Best Team category, was the trio Kiely Kuhlmann, Derek Jaeger, and Sammy Brooks. Derek and Sammy will now be taking their talents to the World Food Championship in Las Vegas.
